Welcome, adventurers! If you’re looking for inspiration and practical information about outdoor activities, you’ve come to the right place.
The Urban Outdoors (formerly Skyline Adventurer) was founded on one simple premise: that anyone can find unique outdoor adventures anywhere in the world, including in their own city! Whether you’re staring off into the mountains near Seattle or dodging taxis in Chicago, we’ll help you find and plan an urban outdoor adventure that suits your abilities and preferences.
While The Urban Outdoors covers almost every activity that involves the outdoors, we focus primarily on:
- Urban hiking, biking, and running
- Urban water sports, like paddling and swimming
- Rock climbing
- Winter sports
- Outdoor city guides
Kay Rodriguez, Founder & Chief Adventure Officer
Kay Rodriguez is an outdoor adventure and travel writer based in Chicago, IL. She’s been working in the media world since 2012, and focuses on hiking, camping, and running. You might recognize her from Urban Outdoors’ sister blog, Jetfarer, where she writes about short-term bucket list adventures around the world.
While living in Chicago, Kay saw a desperate need for highlighting the fun and unique ways to get outdoors without leaving the city. She realized that other city dwellers often feel the same way. So, she founded Urban Outdoors in 2019 as the first and only outdoors-focused blog for city dwellers on the web.
Throughout her career in travel, Kay’s writing and adventures have been featured in National Geographic, USA Today, Business Insider, The Points Guy, and several other internationally-renowned publications.
Natalie Ringel, Paddling Specialist
Natalie Ringel is Urban Outdoors’ paddling content writer, and she loves everything and anything that has to do with the outdoors. She is originally from outside of Chicago (and naturally is a deep-dish pizza kind of girl), and her love for the outdoors comes from the countless summers spent in Minnesota. From paddleboarding to kayaking, she loves being on the water, and hopes to share her passion for the outdoors with the UO community.
Natalie is currently a college student who takes every opportunity to spend time outdoors and away from the lecture hall. So far, her favorite trips have been week-long backpacking and canoeing programs in Canada and the Adirondacks. When she is not traversing some way-too-steep trails, you can find her in the kitchen cooking (Mediterranean is her go-to) or watching some cheesy movie on Netflix (don’t lie…we all do it…).
Garston Lam is Urban Outdoors’ rock climbing content writer, and is a fresh graduate with a healthy affinity for the outdoors. Spending his time split between Hong Kong and London he’s well accustomed to the hustle and bustle of city life, however, somehow he always ends up the same way: Falling off some rock face. His time in the city is often spent dreaming about his next big send (and scoffing down pizza).
Special talents consist of sniffing out the best cracks, putting three digestive biscuits in his mouth at once, and building bomber anchors. However, unfortunate quirks do include the overuse of allez, gorging on pasta sandwiches, and forgetting the rope.
Rachael Hilderbrand is the camping & tips writer for Urban Outdoors. She is passionate about getting outside, exploring new places, and finding hidden off the road gems for her favorite outdoor escapes: hiking and backpacking. She believes some of the best adventure finds are spontaneous! Rachael loves exploring beaches and mountains (beaches with mountains are even better!). Some of her favorite adventures were around her time as a Peace Corps Volunteer from 2016 – 2018 in Mozambique and exploring the off the grid beauties of Mozambique and backpacking southern Africa. She loves learning about new cultures and learning languages.
While she’s had a number of adventures abroad, she is excited to explore more of the U.S. and some of the beautiful national parks and hidden gems in North America! Rachael is originally from Youngstown, Ohio, and is currently located in Washington, D.C. where she works with international programs focused on youth development, education, and cultural exchanges. You can find her on the weekends at her current favorite hiking spots in the D.C. area near Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, and Luray, Virginia.
Lindsey Novakowski is our snow sports writer based in Banff, Alberta. When she’s not hunched over a laptop, you can find her outside, enjoying all of the beauty (and beer) that Banff has to offer.
